During Dean’s first conversation with Michael on Supernatural, one line jumped out at me. Michael claimed that he could use John’s body as a vessel because he comes from the same bloodline as Dean, a bloodline going back to Cain and Abel. It’s all about the blood.
Supernatural fans have been given a clue all along, in the title card for season 5. At the start of every episode, a gush of blood bursts onto the screen over the main title. Blood has always been important on Supernatural, from Azazel dripping it in Sam’s mouth as a baby to Sam drinking demon blood to fuel his strength. Now, more than ever, blood is the key.
Michael’s comment about the bloodline made me ask one important question: if the Winchester family bloodline is the important part, why does it have to be Dean? Sam comes from the same bloodline, so why can’t Sam be Michael’s vessel? Why can’t Dean be Lucifer’s vessel? From a bloodline perspective, the Winchester brothers should be interchangeable as meat suits.
I haven’t quite pieced it together, but I suspect the Winchester bloodline will be the answer to everything in the season finale. The blood in the main title sequence is there for a reason, and while I’m not sure exactly what it is, I have no doubt that there will be blood in the finale.
Right now, my best theory is that Dean (or Sa) decides to try something out and says “Yes” to both Michael and Lucifer, creating the ultimate Apocalyptic battle inside of him. I’m probably way off base with that theory, but there has to be something about the blood.
Like some other shows, “Supernatural” will take on the Valentine’s Day event in next week’s episode. A cupid but not like the usual cherub on mission to make people fall in love with each other will be the Winchester brothers’ problem in “My Bloody Valentine”.
Castiel helps Sam and Dean hunt down Cupid on Valentine’s Day after townspeople start to kill each other for love. However, after Cupid tells them he’s innocent, they discover Famine (guest star James Otis), one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, has arrived in town.
Lex Medlin who was last seen on NBC’s “Southland” guests stars as Cupid. The producers were specifically looking for an actor who can portray a “doughy, out of shape, naked” angel of matchmaking. The Cupid is supposed to greet everyone with “enormous bear hugs that almost break their ribs.”
The Valentine’s special will air on Thursday, February 11.
Nrama: So what do you have coming up next?
Shanks: I literally just yesterday finished a guest spot on Supernatural. I had a relatively minor role in it, working with Jared (Padalecki) and Jensen (Ackles), and a few other actors, fighting some demons and throwing down with the boys. I think that will be out in a couple months. The episode is called, I think, ‘99 Problems’. I’m not featured quite prominently in it, but it was a lot of fun to play in that universe. It fit into my schedule quite handily. That’s why I did it.
Nrama: Is there anything about the character you can tell us?
Shanks: Yeah. The character’s name is Rob, and he’s a member of the Sacrament Lutheran Church, and basically it’s a township that has pretty much organized to fight the demon apocalypse that’s coming. They’re not running and screaming. They’re hunkering down. They’ve figured out a way to fight and whatnot. They boys come across them and are quite enamored by they way they’ve organized themselves. They have a sort of militia…when a tragedy occurs in Rob’s family he sort of takes a bit of a hardline approach when it comes to his beliefs. I’ll leave it at that because it starts getting into spoiler territory beyond that.

Fans of “Supernatural” will get to see Sam and Dean’s parents again in the next episode. The angels send Anna back in time to kill John and Mary Winchester before they can conceive Sam knowing that if Sam was never born then Lucifer won’t be able to use him as his vessel.
Castiel sends Sam and Dean back to 1978 so they can stop Anna, and the two brothers are reunited with their parents. Mary recognizes Dean as a hunter since he visited her in the past once before but tries to keep the truth from John.
Although the role of John Winchester was portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the pilot and few episodes after, he would be filled by Matthew Cohen in this one. Meanwhile, the role of Mary is filled by Amy Gumenick who, like Cohen, is back after playing the character in a 2008 episode “In the Beginning”.
“Back to the Future II” will air on February 4.
