‘Supernatural’ season 3 opens with a bang; now on DVD
ByThere are things that go bump in the night and for Sam and Dean Winchester, it’s all in a days work to track and eliminate the ones doing the bumping. This week Sci-Fi and action fans are in for a special treat with the release of the third season of “Supernatural.”
After losing their mother in a tragic and unexplained accident involving a demon, Sam and Dean were raised by their father to hunt down the likes of ghosts, vampires, shape shifters, werewolves and even demons.
Season three opens with a bang, literally, as a gateway to the underworld was opened at the end of the second season leaving hordes of demons on the loose and looking for the Winchester brothers. Episode one finds the brothers doing battle with seven incarnations of the deadly sins and holding up in a jail besieged by an army of demons while another finds Sam re-living the same day over and over in which Dean is killed. Topping off the tension are Lillith, a childlike demon, and FBI Agent Henricksen who’s determined to lock the duo in prison for life.
All 16 episodes are included in this five-disc set along with extras such as a gag reel, confessionals from the cast, deleted scenes, short segments highlighting favorite aspects of specific episodes, a look at Dean Winchester’s 1967 Chevy Impala and a behind-the-scenes look at the series’ special effects.
Overall, “Supernatural” is one of the most action packed and engaging shows on television today. The characters are believable and the story pulls you in until the cliff hanger ending of the season. This series is a good pick for fans of shows such as “The X-Files.”
TRANSFORMERS
Intergalactic beings from the planet Cybertron have made their way to Earth looking for a mysterious power knows as the “all spark” in the flashy action flick “Transformers.” The movie which was originally released on DVD in 2007, gets a major upgrade this week with a high definition release on Sony’s Blu-Ray format.
The battle between the peaceful Autobots and the evil Decpticons has never looked better as the two factions collide in a slick 1080p high-definition picture. Along with the higher quality picture, Blu-Ray discs also offer a higher amount of memory space on each disc which allows the filmmakers to pack on the extras.
And pack it on they did, we get commentary by director Michael Bay, a heads-up display that shows up as the film plays offering picture in picture viewing, behind-the-scenes information from a production, film making and writing prospective.
If you’re able to hook your Blu-Ray player up to the Internet, then you can access real-time, online content that boasts a map that shows which transformers are engaged in battle and which side is taking heavier losses. We also get a look into the film’s stunt training, location scouting and interviews with the cast and crew along with theatrical trailers and television spots.
Overall, if you own a Blu-Ray player or just want to experience the film at its greatest, then “Transformers” is a definite must-have for your collection.
